Learn English in Brisbane, Australia
The sixth largest country in the world, this country-continent features some of the most unique landscapes in the world. Australia offers an immense variety of excursions, sports, and, of course, opportunities to learn and perfect English. From the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland to to the mystic rock formation of Uluru in the interior, the unique combination of the Australian lifestyle and landscapes offers unequalled opportunities for an unforgettable experience.Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, is midway up the east coast of Australia - 27.5oS, 153oE. With the Gold Coast to the south and the Sunshine Coast to the north, domestic and international airports, Brisbane is an ideal headquarters for an Australian holiday.
Brisbane, indeed all Queensland, operates on Eastern Standard Time which is 10 hours ahead of GMT. Summertime or Daylight Saving is not observed.
Residents and visitors to Brisbane enjoy a wide range of landscapes and lifestyles. The inner-city, metropolitan Brisbane is surrounded by leafy, sometimes very hilly, suburbs. Further out in the suburbs, the traditional Australian house on a large block or even acreage dominates.
Moreton Bay and its islands provide water sports, sailing and sea-side suburbs. The Pacific Highway leads south to the Gold Coast and its well-known surf beaches.
North is the seaside town of Redcliffe, the rain forest and picturesque countryside of Pine Rivers, Caboolture and the Glasshouse Mountains. Bribie Island offers the first surf beach to the north. The Sunshine Coast towns and hinterland are popular holiday spots.
Travelling west of Brisbane, past Ipswich, you soon climb the Great Dividing Range to Toowoomba and the rich plains of the Darling Downs.
In Australia, we drive on the left side of the road. Although there are trains, buses and ferries in Brisbane, most families own at least one car. The local currency is Australian dollars and the smallest coin in use is the 5 cent coin.
The School
Our goal is to create ideal global citizens of the future - people who can cross cultural bridges. Students leave with important skills in communication, negotiation, presentation and information technology. Our programs, facilities and team are selected to help students become empowered citizens. English is one tool in this process. We have serious attendance and English Only policies. Our programs are intensive. We offer a range of accredited programs at the school and in combination with other colleges. Our facilities include an adult learning environment and state of the art technology.
Our students study hard, play hard and experience a LOT! The most successful of our students have important goals, and English is a part of their plans.
The students come from 9 countries and 4 continents, but they all have similar goals: To learn English, to travel, to be successful, to learn about the world, to enjoy life. Most of our students are college students or college graduates. Since the youngest age for our students is 16, we maintain an adult environment.
Our students often have work and international travel experience. They are able to talk about their dreams of the future and their knowledge of the present. Because of our strict English Only Policy, it is easy to talk and make friends with people from different cultures. Before school, at lunch break and even on weekend outings, students only speak English.
During breaks and after classes our students work or write e-mail in the modern computer lab or just relax and talk in the lounge or the outdoor courtyard.
All teachers are professionally trained English language instructors with overseas teaching experience. Each of them has unique skills and talents that help make studying at the school a challenging and fun experience.
Our teachers really care about students' progress and success in learning English. To ensure success, during every session students receive individual attention in one-to-one Student Teacher Conferences, where students get practical advice on improving their progress.
Language Courses
There are six levels of English: Introductory, Elementary, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, Advanced, Advanced Plus. Your placement in these levels is determined by a paper test and an oral interview when you enter the school. Level placement is based on your knowledge of English and your ability to communicate. Most levels have a 3-session (12 weeks) curriculum. You will advance to higher levels as your English ability improves. Your advancement to the next level depends upon a combination of the following factors: Student progress report, Attitude in class, Class participation, Class attendance, Teacher recommendations, TOEIC results, Communication Assessment.
If you intend to stay for an entire academic year, you can study for a longer period (at least 36 weeks) yet take 4 weeks of vacation to make the most out of your stay in Australia.
We offer four major programs in our catalogue:
- English Communication Program
In this program students improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing. Studying in an international classroom with students from many countries helps build the environment necessary to become a comfortable English speaker. Pronunciation and vocabulary-building are also covered in this program. - Academic Preparation Program
This challenging, rewarding program is for students who want to study in an English-language college or university. We focus on students' listening, reading, writing, research, thinking, problem solving, presentation, debating and discussion skills in an academic environment. All students experience authentic, college-level reading and listening materials.
Students generally study the IELTS Academic Preparation stream, but students may also choose to study TOEFL Academic Preparation stream. - Business English Program
This program is for students who are interested in a career in international business. The Business English Program challenges students' thinking, reading, presentation, problem solving, writing, negotiating and discussion skills in a business context. Role-play and negotiation activities are an important part of the Business English Program. Also, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and general computing skills are included. In addition to classroom work, students work on monthly projects that focus on practicing business-related English communication skills. - Cambridge Exam Preparation Program
The Cambridge Programs prepare students for the five test papers of either the First Certificate in English (FCE) or Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) exams. The text books and program materials have been specially selected to prepare students for success on the exams. The Cambridge FCE Program is offered three times per year, scheduled to prepare students for the March, June and December exams. The Cambridge CAE Program is offered two times per year in preparation for the June & December Exams.
Students experience at least 3 complete practice exams in their classes.
Workshops
We provide a variety of workshops to help our students in their specific problem areas. The price of the workshops is included in the courses and participation is entirely optional. Our workshops are:- Accent Reduction Workshops
Students sign up for these workshops based on their mother tongue and receive specialized practice exercises designed to target specific pronunciation problems experienced by speakers of their native language. There are three, 45-minute, semi-private workshops per session. - Grammar Workshops
Students sign up for these workshops based on their level. They may bring questions and/or problems to ask the instructor, or they may be given assignments to work through under the instructor's guidance. There are three, 45-minute remedial/review workshops per session. - Specialty Workshops
On the first Monday, third Friday and last Wednesday of every session, the school offers interesting workshops with guest speakers from the local community and/or members of our staff. Topics include language skills, learning skills, life skills, 'English Through Songs', study skills and personal safety. Speakers range from visiting professors, to local law enforcement officers. - The Reading Club
Students who love literature and/or students who want to improve their reading and vocabulary building skills should join the Reading Club. Students can sign up for this club by level (higher or lower). Club members and an instructor meet 3 times per session to discuss the assigned reading. Students must complete the readings before the club meeting. - The Movie Club
Club members meet to watch and discuss alternative movies. What does alternative mean? Join the movie club and find out. - The Conversation Club
Students meet with native English speakers from the local community in a safe and controlled environment for lively small group conversation over a cup of coffee or perhaps a game of billiards.
Accommodation
Home-stay placement is an important part of your overseas experience. Your Host Family will help you learn about Australian families and culture! Our accommodation coordinator carefully screens all our families to ensure that they are responsible, courteous people who will be interested in learning about you and spending time with you. When you stay with a home-stay family, your home-stay family will be a native English-speaking family; you will have your own room (single) with a bed, a desk and a place to put your clothes; you will not share a home stay with another student from your own country, so you can continue practicing English in the home. Our Accommodation Coordinator will regularly check on you and your family to make sure you are happy with your home stay.
When you register you will receive your Host Family details--before you arrive in Australia--including Family details, Photographs, Introductory letter, House rules.
Activities & Excursions
The goal of the Activities Program is to provide students with a range of healthy activities that they might not try at home. Our Activities Coordinator organizes trips and activities for students, and can help students in many ways.During your stay, you will have the opportunity to take part to the following activities: golf, surfing, scuba diving, bushwalking, sailing, rock-climbing, seeing Aboriginal culture, exploring the Pacific Coast.
Activities are a great way to: practice speaking English outside of the classroom, meet new friends from different cultures and places, be healthy & active, explore Australia.
