Learn English in Perth, Australia

The sixth largest country in the world, this country-continent features some of the most unique landscapes in the world. Australia offers an immense variety of excursions, sports, and, of course, opportunities to learn and perfect English. From the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland to to the mystic rock formation of Uluru in the interior, the unique combination of the Australian lifestyle and landscapes offers unequalled opportunities for an unforgettable experience.

Perth is the thriving capital of Western Australia. With a cosmopolitan population of just over a million, Perth is one of the cleanest, safest and friendliest cities in the Southern Hemisphere. Perth has developed a lifestyle of its own, with an enthusiasm for achievement combined with an enjoyment of leisure/recreation and the great outdoors. The Mediterranean climate (it's the sunniest city in Australia) and multi-cultural community ensure that life in Perth is memorable.

Just inland from the Indian Ocean on the banks of the Swan River, the city was founded on 6th June 1829. Twenty minutes away on the coast is Fremantle - the city's port with a unique maritime flavour combined with a multi-cultural heritage.

Local attractions include:

• Kings Park - magnificent views of Perth City with over 450 different plant and 70 different bird species
• Caversham Wildlife Park - feed the kangaroos, koalas, emus and wombats as well as meet other kinds of Australian natural wildlife
• Fremantle Prison - built between 1850-1860, it was designed for 1000 convicts who arrived to help build Western Australia and was made a tourist attraction in 1992, winning several tourism awards

The School

Located in the heart of the city, our partner school is the most centrally located English language school in Perth. Students from all over the world come here to learn English and experience the wonderful Australian life-style. The school has a Student Services Team dedicated to the welfare of students outside the classroom. So whether organising activities or selecting home stay families, the school aims for first class service to students.

Language Courses

We offer five major programs in our catalogue:

• General English
  This more intensive course offers 25 hours a week of English classes for a duration of 2 to 60 weeks. The course consists of general English classes in the morning followed by small group classes in the afternoons, including an activity or excursion on Friday afternoons. This program is 4 to 36 weeks in length.
  
  
• Academic English
  This program, which is not open to beginners, combines General English classes in the mornings with afternoon courses designed to help students succeed in an academic setting. Subjects include report writing, conducting research and note-taking skills. The course also offers an opportunity to prepare for the IELTS, TOEFL, or TOEIC exams. This course runs for 8 to 16 weeks.
  
  
• English for Business
  Combined with general English, this is an afternoon elective for full-time students. Students apply the language skills learnt in the morning to any business environment. Marketing and finance topics, combined with business presentation techniques are an integral part of the elective. The course runs 4 to 12 weeks and is not open to beginners.
  
  
• Cambridge Exam Preparation
  First Certificate in English (FCE): This examination course is for students who want to achieve greater clarity and accuracy in both spoken and written English. The course has been designed to provide systematic preparation for the FCE examination, concentrating on the development of a good working knowledge of structure and grammar, a wide vocabulary as well as clarity and accuracy in both spoken and written English.
  Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): This examination course offers a high level final qualification in English to those who need to use English in their jobs. The course concentrates on the development of the knowledge and skills required for the examination with the emphasis very much on real-world tasks. This course has been designed to provide a very sound knowledge of the structure and usage of the language, and high levels of accuracy, fluency and power of expression.
  
  

Accommodation

We believe home stay accommodation can be of great benefit to English Language students, as they are able to experience authentic English in a family environment. Even if students would prefer to live in a private shared house, we recommend students start in home stay accommodation for the first four weeks, while they look for suitable shared accommodation.

All of our home stays are carefully chosen to ensure students receive a high standard of accommodation and a warm and friendly welcome special to Western Australia.

Home stay students have their own room with a bed, desk, and wardrobe space. Students in home stay receive 16 meals per week - breakfast and dinner during the week (half board) and breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday.

Most home stays are within 30 minutes travelling time from the school by bus or train. Perth has an easy-to-use and inexpensive public transport system. The school's student card entitles students who study for six weeks or more to buy a student ticket for Perth's transport system, which gives a 45% discount on adult fares. Students are responsible for their own travel costs between their home stay and the school.

The school may also be able to book you into a city based hostel only a 15 minute walk from the college. This is for the more independent student who wants to enjoy city living at an affordable price. You have your own room and share kitchen and bathroom facilities.

Other accommodation options are available on request.

Activities & Excursions

The Student Services Team organises its own social activities. Every Friday afternoon there is a different activity. This can be anything from beach volleyball to horse riding, or a museum visit to bike riding in Kings Park. The activities programme is varied and suits every student budget. All the activities are accompanied by a teacher or member of staff.

Every fortnight a mid-week dinner activity is organised. A teacher or member of staff takes a group of students out for dinner or the movies. This varies from a Pizza and Pasta night to a movie at the Outdoor Cinema in the Park (during summer).

There are also plenty of weekend excursions to join. Amongst the popular ones are Monkey Mia, South West Trip or Pinnacles at Sunset. Bookings and payments can be made at the school and a new programme is available at reception every month.

Fees

Accommodation Fees: The first 4 weeks of accommodation in a host family must be paid with the enrolment fees. From the 5th week, you can pay the rest of the amount to the school directly and choose to stay in a student residence if you want.

For stays from 4 to 12 weeks, the total amount for accommodation must be paid in advance. For longer stays, you can choose between anticipated payment per trimester (in €), or payment directly to the school (in AU$) from the 5th week.

Course Fees: The complete fee structure for this program is laid out in the table to the right. Fees include:

• program chosen by the student,
• accommodation with a host family in an individual room,
• full board if in host family
• School facilities: language lab, computer lab, library, Internet...
• some of our sports and cultural activities
• all administration costs

Fees do not include:

• flight and airport pickup
• fees for optional exams
• optional excursions
• Student's visa if you are staying more than 12 weeks.

  • 10 week FCE and CAE preparation course: 05/01 to 13/03 (exam on 14/03).
  • 12 week FCE and CAE preparation course: 23/03 au 12/06, 14/09 to 04/12. FCE on 16/06 and 08/12; CAE on 17/06 and 09/12.
• Holidays:
  • 01/01, 26/01, 09/03, 10/04, 11/04, 13/04, 27/04, 08/06, 05/10, 03/11, 25/12 and 26/12
