College in the UK
In England, the term "College" designates an institution that is between secondary and post-secondary education, that is, between school and university. The students are typically aged 16 to 19 during day courses, and very often there are evening or part-time programs designed for older residents of the region. With our partner colleges in England, we have developed a program that is designed to prepare foreign students for university in England. The program combines English as a foreign language classes with regular classes on a variety of university preparatory subjects, including computer skills, business language, or tourism.Academics
At the most basic level, students in our program begin a full time (between 20 and 25 hours a week), structured program of English as a foreign language augmented with regular academic courses that suitable to that student's level of English. Additionally, there are a variety of extra-curricular activities that permit participants meet and interact with English students, such as sports, excursions, tours, and so on. Additionally, from within the framework of this program students can prepare for the Cambridge exams (the First, Advanced, and Proficiency) and sit those exams in December or June.Alternatively, students who already have an advanced knowledge of English and wish to remain in the College for an entire academic year can take the college's regular academic program with the British students, augmented with a few advanced English as a Second Language classes. Students who choose this option can either take a year of specialized classes to prepare for a specific field of study in university (we can arrange classes in virtually any field) or prepare for and take the English A-Levels.
College Locations
We work with several schools throughout England to place students in the program that best suits them. Our partner schools are mostly in medium sized cities or large towns, such as Leicester, Boston, Hull or Bristol. Students who wish may also go to schools in Wales (Cardiff) or Scotland (Dundee). We seek out locations that provide students with a wide range of opportunities for sporting and cultural activities while avoiding the problems of large cities. We consider a student's academic goals and wishes first and foremost when selecting a school. However, the exact locations are often a function of the date that students apply; the sooner we receive an application, the more schools will have openings and the more likely it is that we will find schools that correspond with a student's wishes. We typically receive the most interest in the program that we offer in Oxford to prepare students for university in Great Britain.
Placement is always guaranteed as of the moment you receive confirmation from us, however we reserve the right to change schools (within the same region and academic program) in the event of unanticipated changes in circumstances.
Accommodation
Accommodation is typically in an individual room with an English host family, including half board during the week (morning and evening meals) and full board on weekends (3 meals). The families are selected and checked by the colleges themselves, and offer accommodation to British students as well as foreign ones. You will have the chance to participate in the daily life of your family in addition to your academic experience.Alternatively, students who apply early (at least 6 months before the start of the school year) may also stay in a "Hall of Residence," take a room in a house shared between students, or split an apartment with other students.
Medical Assistance
Students are automatically enrolled in their college's medical service and covered by the English social security system. The colleges have medical personnel available during the day in case of problem, and students can also call their personal tutor in case of an emergency. We can also provide additional coverage for incidents requiring repatriation to our Belgian students (Europ-Assistance) if desired.Course Costs
