University Level English Preparation in Oxford
Oxford was first occupied in Saxon times with the foundation of St Frideswide's nunnery in the 8th century, and was first mentioned in written records in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for the year 912. St Frideswide is the patron saint of both the city and university. The prestige of Oxford is seen in the fact that it received a charter from King Henry II, granting its citizens the same privileges and exemptions as those enjoyed by the capital of the kingdom; and various important religious houses were founded in or near the city. The University of Oxford is first mentioned in 12th century records. Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford is unique as a college chapel and cathedral in one foundation. Oxford has numerous major tourist attractions, many belonging to the university and colleges. As well as several famous institutions, the town centre is home to Carfax Tower which offers views over the spires of the city. Many tourists shop at the historic Covered Market. In the summer, punting on the Thames/Isis and the Cherwell is popular.
Academics
PrerequisitesThe course is for students from both the European Union and the rest of the world. You should intend to go on to study at University after taking the ISP (International Study Programme). You need to have a good intermediate level of English already before you can join the course. Typically, students who have an adequate level of English have either:
- Studied English at school up to age 18,
- Passed the Cambridge First Certificate in English with a Grade C, or
- Obtained a score of 5.0 in the British Council International English Language Test.
Options
In addition to following courses on English, you will follow a series of courses designed to give them the background necessary to succeed in British universities. Upon enrollment, you will have to choose one of the areas of emphasis below, and three of the subjects from within that area.

You will build up a portfolio of credits during the year based on your coursework, examination performance and attendance in class. The credits are awarded by the Oxfordshire Open College Network a qualification recognised by all British Universities as meeting their general entry requirements for a degree course.
Accommodation
We arrange accommodation in host families within 20 to 45 minutes of the college. You will have an individual room and half-board (morning and evening meals). The families generally host between 1 and 3 students, and we typically assure that you will be the only speaker of your native language in the family, although in certain cases a total lack of options may force exceptions. The families are selected by our local correspond ant, who is permanently available for any issues regarding accommodation. There are other possibilities available for accommodation if you choose to arrange it for yourself, including student dormitories, shared apartments, etc, however we must stress that students should visit the apartment before signing a contract as we have had many complaints regarding sight-unseen rentals that we can do nothing about.
If, however, you prefer to stay in one of our host families while retaining a certain degree of independence, we can arrange stays in which you have the possibility to use the family kitchen but provide your own meals. These options are slightly less costly than half-board.
School Facilities
As a student in the International Study Program, you will have access to all of the regular school facilities, including:- Personal Guidance. You will have an Academic adviser who teaches in the ISP, access to Career officers who will help you plan your future, and personal counselling.
- Logistic Support. You will have on-site medical advice and support as well as access to the school cafeteria and sporting facilities.
- Academic Facilities. The school's libraries, Learning Resource Center, Computer labs, and the Student Association will all be open to you.
