English Courses and University Classes in the USA

This program is intended for students who would like to attend an American university but need to improve their English first.

Students begin with a semester of English classes only, which provides time to improve their English in a non-competetive yet highly effective environment as well as time to habituate to the host country. The following semester, students take a semester of classes in an American "Community College." Community Colleges, which are typically oriented toward the broadest possible audience, offer students a university level education in a very wide variety of subjects with a wide variety of classes.

At the conclusion of this program, participants can opt to continue their education in their Community College and obtain a university degree or, depending on academic performance, transfer into the somewhat more prestegious American university system. The credits obtained at our partner institutions are, of course, fully acredited by American authorities and will also transfer to most universities in Europe and the elsewhere in the world.

Our counsellors in the United States will help students manage their academic careers, regardless of their ambitions. Students interested in taking English classes only should see our page English in the United States

The Program

The program consists of 12 or 16 weeks of intensive English classes followed by a semester of university classes in one of our partner colleges. The English courses are oriented toward preparing students to pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam, which is a prerequisite for almost all American Colleges and Universities (with a minimum score of 167, or high-intermediate).

San Diego

Downtown San Diego
San Diego, situated on the Pacific coast right on the US-Mexico border, is often regarded as the city that Los Angeles could have been but never became. The city is clean, safe, and just fun. The city, which does not experience cold temperatures in winter, is bathed in sun over 300 days a year, but its proximity to the Pacific ocean keeps the summer highs at comfortable levels. The beaches of San Diego offer some of the world's best surfing, and the downtown districts offer great opportunities to eat, drink, and, of course, shop. Just an hour away, the Laguna Mountains await the more adventurous spirits.

The School

Our partner school is located in the very center of the city, close to several public transit stops. The campus is a couple of minutes by foot from the Horton Plaza shopping district, the historic Gaslamp quarter and the new Baseball stadium, and it not far from Balboa Park and the famous San Diego zoo. The public transit is excellent and the lines between the campus, the accommodation and the city's local attractions are fast and efficient. The English classes have between 6 and 8 participants and 2 to 4 professors teach in each class, in rotation. Participants take a placement test on arrival and are placed in the most appropriate level.

Activities

The school organizes many activities each week, for example afternoons rollerblading, kayaking, rock climbing, bowling, cycling, surgins, beach volleyball, etc.

Weekend excursions bring students to Disneyland, Universal Studios, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Sea World, etc.

Accommodation

It is possible to stay either in an American host family or in a shared, equiped apartment.

Host family accommodation is in single rooms and includes half-board.

The rooms in student apartments are shared with a student of the same gender and a different nationality. The apartments are completely equiped. This solution is better for students who are more independent who prefer residential living to a host family. Individual studios are also available for a supplement.

Please note: the apartments fill very quickly. Please reserve at least 3 months in advance to guarantee a place. Reservations are effective only after receipt of a deposit. If the apartments are full students will be placed in a host family.

The famous Alcatraz prison
San Francisco, which Californians refer to as "the City by the Bay" and residents affectionately call "the City," is one of the most dynamic cities in the world. Situated on an 11 kilometer wide peninsula between the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco is blessed with a wonderfully temperate California climate and clean, fresh air. It is a very "green" city, with parks and beaches within walking distance of any spot in the city. For a student, the city could not be more accessible; San Francisco is home to the United States' premiere public transportation network, with buses, trams, and cable cars spidering out from the famous Market Street shopping district to every corner of the city. The famous Alcatraz island is just a short boat ride away, and the Giant Redwood and Yosemite National Parks are within two hours by car.

The School

Situated in the heart of San Francisco's financial district, our partner school gives students the opportunity to experience the city in all of its intensity.

The English classes host an average of 6 and a maximum of 8 students. Two to four professors teach in each class in rotation. Students are assigned an appropriate class on arrival after having taken a placement exam.

Extra-curricular activities

The school organizes multiple activities each week. For example, in the afternoons students often go rollerblading, rock climbing, bowling, bike riding, beach volleyball, the zoo, etc.

During the weekends, excursions go to destinations such as Disneyland, Universal Studios, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Sea World, etc.
