English Courses and University Classes in the USA
This program is intended for students who would like to attend an American university but need to improve their English first.Students begin with a semester of English classes only, which provides time to improve their English in a non-competetive yet highly effective environment as well as time to habituate to the host country. The following semester, students take a semester of classes in an American "Community College." Community Colleges, which are typically oriented toward the broadest possible audience, offer students a university level education in a very wide variety of subjects with a wide variety of classes.
At the conclusion of this program, participants can opt to continue their education in their Community College and obtain a university degree or, depending on academic performance, transfer into the somewhat more prestegious American university system. The credits obtained at our partner institutions are, of course, fully acredited by American authorities and will also transfer to most universities in Europe and the elsewhere in the world.
Our counsellors in the United States will help students manage their academic careers, regardless of their ambitions. Students interested in taking English classes only should see our page English in the United States
The Program
The program consists of 12 or 16 weeks of intensive English classes followed by a semester of university classes in one of our partner colleges. The English courses are oriented toward preparing students to pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam, which is a prerequisite for almost all American Colleges and Universities (with a minimum score of 167, or high-intermediate).In more detail:
-
First semester: English classes
The intensive English program involves 30 lessons per week of 50 minutes each.
The first 20 hours of these lessons are general English courses. A further 10 lessons a week are oriented uniquely toward the TOEFL.
These courses are principally based on conversation, comprehension, reading and writing, with secondary emphasis on prononciation and grammar.
This part of the program takes place on the international portion of the campus. Participants will meet students from around the world, and are unlikely to meet students who speak their own language.
In general, this is a 16 week program, although students who already have a fairly high English level may take a shorter 12 program at certain locations (Glendora and Las Vegas).
- Second Semester: Academic Courses
After taking the TOEFL, students move into the regular academic portion of the college. The choice of courses is very wide at all of our locations, and students may choose almost any major, including Communications, Public Relations, Criminology and Law, Computer Science, Psychology, Graphic Design, Marketing, Hotel Management, and on and on. Students are, naturally, fully integrated with the American students.
Students must take a full time program, consisting of 12 to 18 credit hours (American) per semester.
Accommodation
We offer two possibilities for accommodation:- Host Family: This is probably the best way to become acquainted with American culture and have the greatest possibility to practice your English outside of class.
- Dormitory: Dormitories are the norm for American students. The rooms are located on or near the campus and are typically the most convenient housing arrangement.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Each campus offers students numerous possibilites for relaxation and fun outside of class. There are visits to the cities, weekend excursions, international weekends, sporting events, etc. The participants in each program have access to their college's clubs and activities as well as programs designed especially for international students.Prerequisites
Students who wish to participate in this program must:- be at least 17 years old
- have received a diploma of secondary education
- already have a medium to good command of English (level B1)
