English in the United States

From the beaches of Florida to the skyscrapers of New York, the hills of California to the cosmopolotain atmosphere of Boston, the United States has everything a visitor could desire. The diversity of landscapes, peoples and cultures allows anybody to find find their own piece of the American Dream.

American English is not only spoken in this vast country, but it is also the most widely used English dialect world wide thanks to its prevalence in science, cinema, and music across the globe.

Our program offers courses in the most attractive locations in the United States: New York, Boston, California, Las Vegas or Florida.

The Schools

We select our partners in the United States first and formost for the quality of education that they provide as well as the extra curricular environment that they offer. They are specialized in teaching English as a foreign language and dispose of excellent infrastructure. There geographic locations offer students the oportunity to either discover one of the country's metropoli or to enjoy the wide open spaces of the American countryside. They are all very international, meaning that you will not be surrounded by speakers of your own language.

The Courses

We offer the possibility to take:

Extra-curricular Activities

Our partner schools generally organize several social and cultural activities per week, some in the evenings and others during the afternoons. They also organize weekend excursions to nearby attractions, such as Disney World in Florida, the Grand Canyon from Las Vagas, or Harvard University in Boston. These activities can be reserved and payed through the school directly.

Accommodation

We offer accommodation either in host families or in shared apartments / dormitories.

Our host families are carefully selected and regularly inspected by our local agents. Host families are probably the best choice for students who want to discover American culture on a daily basis and who wish to practise their English with native speakers outside of class. Students receive a short description of their family before departing for the US. Host families are available at all of our destinations except for Boston.

The dormitories and shared apartments are available for all students over the age of 18 who desire a somewhat greater degree of independence during their stay. The type of apartments and dormitories available vary by location.

New York

Top of Page
The new york skyline
Relax in Central Park
Times Square at night
With a population of 8.5 million inhabitants, New York is the most famous and most dynamic of the United States. Manhattan, the capital of the American financial world, offers students a wide range of imcomparable cultural and and sporting events, diversions, restaraunts, markets, ethnic diversity, shopping centers... It offers too much to name, in fact. Even better, the public transportation is quick and efficient, and in the last 10 years New York has become one of the 10 safest cities in the United States.

The School

Our school in New York inhabits five buildings and teaches classes to several thousand students each year, including many in university preparation programs. The school offers intensive programs (min 2 weeks) or long duration courses of 20 to 30 hours a week for up to one year. All of the programs offer a choice of emphasis between general English, TOEFL preparation, and business English. As some courses require a minimum level of proficiency before starting and to ensure the proper placement of students, the school organizes an oral and written aptitude test at the beginning of each course.

Three of the school's five campuses are located in Queens, one is in Manhattan, and one is just west of the city in New Jersey. Unless an applicant requests otherwise, we always place students in the Manhattan campus as this is the most centrally located of the five. It is just a stone's throw from the Empire State building and close to everything that makes New York a unique city: the lights of Times Square, the art of the Lincoln Center, the United Nations compound, the theater of Broadway, the tranquility of Central Park, the popular subculture of Downtown and the highest quality of New York's stores and restaurants.

The school offers an excellent multimedia center, with books, videos and CD-ROMs, PCs with educational software designed to prepare students for the TOEFL and, of course, Internet and Email. Class sizes are typically around 15 students with a maximum of 20. A cafeteria offers hot meals at lunch and snacks throughout the day.

Academics

We offer 3 programs at this school in our catalogue:

Accommodation

We offer two types of accommodation in New York: in host families or in student residences.

The first of the two residences, which is reserved for students following and active post-secondary education, is situated in Manhattan, a 15 minutes' walk from the school. All rooms are individual and offer a great deal of comfort as well as a friendly atmosphere. The residence offers: The second residence (YMCA) is about 45 minutes from the school. It offers either double (shared) or single rooms, but no meals. The residence offers the following services: Please note: Accommodation must be reserved at least 4 weeks in advance.

San Diego

A beach in San Diego
Downtown San Diego
San Diego, situated on the Pacific coast right on the US-Mexico border, is often regarded as the city that Los Angeles could have been but never became. The city is clean, safe, and just fun. The city, which does not experience cold temperatures in winter, is bathed in sun over 300 days a year, but its proximity to the Pacific ocean keeps the summer highs at comfortable levels. The beaches of San Diego offer some of the world's best surfing, and the downtown districts offer great opportunities to eat, drink, and, of course, shop. Just an hour away, the Laguna Mountains await the more adventurous spirits.

The School

Our partner school is situated in the center of the city, close to several public transportation stops. Public transit is excellent and the commute between the school and student accommodation are simple and fast. The classes host a maximum 8 students with an average class size around 6. The Classes

Nous offrons trois options à San Diego: If you wish to go to the United States for an entire academic year, these courses are combinable with our university year, which allows students to attend an accredited university in the United States for a semester or academic year.

Extra-curricular activities

San Francisco

The famous Alcatraz prison
San Francisco, which Californians refer to as "the City by the Bay" and residents affectionately call "the City," is one of the most dynamic cities in the world. Situated on an 11 kilometer wide peninsula between the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco is blessed with a wonderfully temperate California climate and clean, fresh air. It is a very "green" city, with parks and beaches within walking distance of any spot in the city. For a student, the city could not be more accessible; San Francisco is home to the United States' premiere public transportation network, with buses, trams, and cable cars spidering out from the famous Market Street shopping district to every corner of the city. The famous Alcatraz island is just a short boat ride away, and the Giant Redwood and Yosemite National Parks are within two hours by car.

The School

Situated in the heart of San Francisco's financial district, our partner school gives students the opportunity to experience the city in all of its intensity.

Classes host an average of 6 and a maximum of 8 students. Two to four university professors teach in each class in rotation. Students are assigned an appropriate class on arrival after having taken a placement exam.

Its intense cultural life, prestigeous schools and universities, festivals, animated night life and charming architecture attract students from across the United States and the world. The School

Our partner school is situated on a Boston university campus and is one of the premiere English teaching institutions of the American university system. It is only 15 minutes from the historic city center by bus.

The professors are all certified and experienced teachers of English as a foreign language. The class sizes average about 8 and the maximum is 15, which creates an ideal and dynamic atmosphere for class interaction.

The campus covers 33 hectars of magnificent wooded land. Founded in 1911, the school offers students both an agreable atmosphere of traditional architecture and and the comfort of a modern infrastructure.

Students have access to all of the campus infrastructure: library and media center, computer labs with internet access, language labratory, university cafeteria, indoor sporting facilities and gym, tennis courts, golf courses, running track, etc.

Activities

The school organizes a variety of social and cultural activities, as well as day excursions to different attractions. These include the Museum of Sciences, the Museum of Fine Arts, the New England Aquarium, Red Sox baseball games, the Hard Rock Café, etc. There are also more distant destinations offered, including the ski slopes of New England, Montreal, New York City or even whale watching.

The courses

We have two options available in Boston campus In both cases, students receive a healthy dose of home work.

Accommodation

Accommodation at our Boston campus is in student residence with full board. Students share a bathroom, laundry facilities, and a comfortable lounge with TV, video and telephones. The meals are served in the Univerisity cafeteria.

Surfing near Oceanside
With 900 miles of beaches and a chain of islands called The Keys, it’s not hard to see why Florida is known as the Sunshine State! The area is home to NASA headquarters - Kennedy Space Center, magical Walt Disney World and Everglades National Park.

Often referred to as the Venice of America, Fort Lauderdale is the perfect destination for water sports: swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, windsurfing and water-skiing are all available along the Gold Coast. Fort Lauderdale has many surprises for you: Canals interconnect to the famous Intracoastal waterway where majestic cruise ships and luxury yachts find their way into the Atlantic Ocean. Trendy South Beach and Lincoln Road are home to salsa and exciting nightlife. Alligator-shaped Sawgrass Mills Mall is Florida's largest retail and entertainment centre

The School

Founded in 1992, our school has been created to provide an ideal, modern, self-contained learning environment. It offers brand new classrooms and a modern multimedia centre with free Internet access. The outdoor patio, which is nestled in the tropical gardens of our residence, the large swimming pool, Jacuzzi, and a fitness centre combine to make a great setting for social interaction.

The school is located only seven minutes from the beach and with easy access to a variety of restaurants, supermarkets, banks, shopping centres, and a public library. It is situated on a shared property with our student hotel and only 15 minutes biking distance from the nearest beach. With its ideal all-year-round warm climate, Fort Lauderdale is the perfect destination for language learning and fun.

Accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA), our school continually strives to achieve the highest standards. Our friendly and highly-professional academic staff are specifically selected to provide the best learning experience for our students. Class size is maximum 15 students, enabling our teachers to concentrate on the needs of each individual student.

Our methodology combines the best of traditional language teaching and the latest developments in teaching techniques. Students learn relevant language, which they can put to immediate practical use. We teach the four fundamental language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking), with emphasis given according to the students’ needs. Carefully selected and individual fluency activities, such as role-plays, allow students to improve their pronunciation and speak with confidence in a wide variety of situations. We also encourage students to develop effective learning strategies, which enable them to continue learning outside the classroom. We offer students the opportunity to discuss their progress with their teachers regularly.
