French in Brussels
As a European capital, Brussels is characterised by its considerably diversity. Its leading role within the European Union has acted as a magnet, drawing commercial and non-profit enterprises of all sorts.Brussels is also city with a rich cultural history, proudly exhibiting the artifacts of its long history. It has attracted writers and artists from many schools for hundreds of years, and Belgian artists contributed extensively to building Brussels' world-wide reputation.
Whether architects, painters, writers or musicians, well-known personalities such as Victor Horta, René Magritte, Paul Delvaux, Hergé or Jacques Brel, all attest to the cultural wealth of the city.
Brussels is also a ”green“ city. There are numerous parks throughout the city, which offer the visitor the opportunity of strolling or riding a bicycle. Also, the beautiful Forêt de soignes, or Forest of the Swans, extends from the south almost into the heart of the city.
After its fortification in the 10th century, the city quickly grew into a trading cross-roads and together with its exceptional strategic location, Brussels became one of the locations kings and aristocrats across Europe envied most. From the middle ages until 1830, the city was alternately possessed by the German, Spanish, Austrian, French and Dutch kings. In 1830, Brussels finally gained its independence when it seceded from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and has since dedicated itself to building a progressive, liberal economy and lifestyle.
No description of Brussels could be complete without mentioning the excellent cuisine, chocolate, beers and desserts. Brussels offers more choice than any other comparable city, at prices that will satisfy budget-minded travellers and connoisseurs alike.
